Goodby Roundup

OK. So I quit using Roundup some years ago

And the rest of my life turned into managing weeds by hand.

Lo and behold, my wife walks in a week ago

With this stuff called Burn Out II, manufactured

By an outfit called St. Gabriel Organics.

I go, "Yeah, another organic weedkiller that don't do shit."

But I set up a couple test plots just to see........

Well. Bless Me Betsy.

This stuff takes no prisoners.

Mind you, I still do most weeding by hand,

But if you want to wipe out an infestation of noxious weeds,

Such as the Bull Thistle (my main problem)

Then check this out.

It is 100% organo.

You have no idea how timely this information is for me...Thank You!

Groovy. I have been trying the weeding by hand method myself...and it sucks! Thanks for the tip.

Re: Goodby Roundup

Note:

This stuff wipes out everything I've tried it on.

So it is banned from the veggie garden.

And limited to noxious weeds only.

Be careful!

I'd be curious to hear from the kudzu-impaired..................

Poison Ivy....that would make you somewhere other than the west coast I guess. Apparently its all poison oak here.

I knew a guy that would hire himself out to clear poison oak. He did not get any reaction to it. He be telling me about pulling down poison oak vines that were as thick as a shovel handle and I'd break out in a rash just hearing about it.
But...if you can break down the oil in poison oak, the leaf will wither. Maybe the same is true for poison ivy?

For me it's dollar weed - the stuff just spreads like crazy here. All of the weed & feed fertilizers claim to work on it, but nothing does. I'll have to try it....

What's the difference between an organic weedkiller and a non-organic?

scyth 06-28-2009 12:34 AM

Re: Goodby Roundup

bwelkk -

Good question.

You can begin with the ingredients published on the label.......

Roundup, from your dear friends at Monsanto:

Glyphosate, Isopropyl Amine Salt 18%
Diquat Dibromide 0.73%
Other Ingredients 81.27%

Burnout II:

Citric Acid 10%
Clove Oil 6%
Mineral Oil, Gum Arabic, Water 84%

You can research all of these on the net, and draw your own conclusions.

Here is a home remedy for killing anything that grows.

One gallon of white vinegar

One pound of salt

Heat the vinegar and salt until dissolved.

If you want it to stick to plants add a table spoon or two of liquid dish soap.

Apply with a sprayer.

Warning...it will kill everything green it comes in contact with.

Nope -

Compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) attached to scanty

Women's underwear

Generally does the trick, so to speak.

I do believe you are referring to a Scythe,

A longhandled doublehanded plant cutting tool which I have more

Than a passing acquaintance with.

Rather than the Scyths, who were a horseriding nomadic

Group of tribes which traveled West out of Central Asia

Into central Europe

Beginning about 10k years ago.

Now, the interesting thing about the Scyth

Is they were the first to have type B blood.

Rather than A or O.

It remains a fairly unusual blood type,

Although type AB - even more unusual - cropped up a few thousand years ago.

I discovered, quite by accident, a couple decades ago,

That I have type B blood.

My family background is Northern European, like Denmark,

Going back to at least the Crusades, if not earlier.

So I checked it out.

Ya, there was a Northern migration of Scyths,

Ultimately fetching up in the region of what is, today, Denmark.

There you have it, today's trivia,

The difference between Scythe and Scyth.

Yes, but will the microbes in the soil die, too? Salt is pretty nasty stuff. . .in large enough quantities it can make ground infertile for decades.

Re: Goodby Roundup

So, I just placed an order with St. Gabriel Organics for both the general herbicide and the Poison Ivy killer. I also picked up some milky spore for the Japanese beetles and an extra bag of DE.

When I've had the chance to use the herbicides, I'll post a review on their effectiveness.
